“Bayard Rustin” came out of an assignment by a artist in residency at Oxbow School. All I remember was picking an important figure and having the artist challenged us to draw an audience. As one of two students of color on a scholarship, I wanted to convey Bayard Rustin as a relevant figure and how his contributions remain invisible in education and conversations about the Civil Rights and LGBTQ Movement. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, I know now that his invisibility really connected with my experience of being a student of color in my Oxbow experience.
